TAFORI CENTRES

TAFORI has seven research centres in the country, which are distributed in different ecological zones as follows;

Dodoma Arid Zone Afforestation Research Centre (AZARC)

The Centre is located in Dodoma Municipality , Dodoma Region.  It is mandated to carry out research particularly to find out suitable species for afforestation in the semi arid zone of Dodoma, Singida and Manyara Regions.  After identifying suitable species and provenances, further investigations are made to determine management regimes including appropriate agroforestry technologies for specific areas.

Kibaha Lowland Afforestation Research Centre (LARC)

The Centre is located in the Coast Region within the Ruvu North Forest Reserve some 60km West of Dar es Salaam city about 80m a.s.l.  Research activities for the centre cover the Eastern Zone <500m a.s.l within Coast, Dar Es Salaam , Lindi, Mtwara; and part of Morogoro Region.

Major responsibilities to carry out research on tree species and provenancing suitable for afforestation along the coastal lowland (the larger part considered here is the area which lies <100m a.s.l.).

The governing factor in research direction is on stakeholders demand mainly on:

-          Soil conservation

-          Environmental conservation

-              Income generation (fuel wood, poles, timber etc)

-          Sustainable conservation of natural forests

-          Species suitable for different agroforestry technologies

-          Appropriate management regimes

Lushoto Silviculture Research Centre (LSRC)

The Centre is in Lushoto District, Tanga Region. It carries out forestry research under four departments namely; Forest Plantation Management and Agroforestry, Forest Ecology, Forest Genetics and Forest Protection.

Forest Plantation Management and Agroforestry is responsible for conducting research related to plantation forestry and agroforestry.

Forest Ecology mainly deals with research in Botany, Herbarium and Natural Forests .

Forest Genetics has two sections namely:  Seed and Nursery and Tree Breeding.  Seed and Nursery section is responsible for seed establishment of trials (species and provenances selection), collection, extraction, storage, distribution and raising of seedlings while Tree Breeding is responsible for trials maintenance, data collection and evaluation of trials.

Forest protection deals with research and consultancies on Entomology, Pathology and Fire Protection.

The Centre also has established a Desktop publishing unit with the objective of providing services related to typesetting, printing, and binding of documents.   The unit provides services to TAFORI itself, Government institutions and other private institutions including individuals.
